How to Build Muscles After a Stroke
A stroke is a blood clot that occurs in the brain. The clot blocks blood flow to a portion of the brain, thereby killing the surrounding brain cells. A common side effect of a stroke is paralysis or near paralysis. This often leads to muscle deterioration or weakness. Though regaining muscle strength after a stroke is challenging and takes dedication, it can be done.Instructions

How to Build Muscles After a Stroke
-
1
Wait at least one month after having the stroke before working on rebuilding muscle. Do not wait any longer than 12 to 36 months to start rebuilding muscle. This window is the optimum time frame when the body is most receptive to efforts to rebuild muscle mass and strength.

2
Consume adequate amounts of protein to sustain and gain muscle mass. Eat 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight when building muscle mass and 0.4 grams of protein per pound of body weight when sustaining muscle mass.
-
3
Attend physical therapy two to four times per week. Physical therapy is the best way for stroke victims to regain muscle mass and strength. When possible, opt for water therapy, as this type of physical therapy is low-impact and engages all of the muscle groups of the body.

4
Perform as many activities of daily living (ADLs) independently as possible, regardless of how long each task takes to complete. This will build strength, endurance and flexibility. However, be certain to ask for assistance if or when physical discomfort results from performing ADLs. Pushing the muscles to do too much too soon can damage them and hinder progress.
