Stroke Symptoms in Women

A stroke occurs when the blood supply to part of the brain is temporarily blocked, significantly decreasing the oxygen to the affected area. This can quickly cause irreversible tissue damage and lead to permanent paralysis, brain damage or death. In women, the classic symptoms of a stroke are not always present, and this can delay the administering of the clot-busting drug, tPA. Recognizing symptoms that are unique to women can better enable them to get the timely treatment they need for this serious medical condition.
  1. Fainting

    • This is the most unique symptom that women experience. In the case of a stroke, fainting results because of the miscommunication occurring in the brain.

    Loss of Consciousness

    • This sign further complicates the diagnosis process because of the woman's inability to be evaluated for classic stroke symptoms.

    Difficulty Breathing

    • Usually considered a problem with the heart or lungs, treatment for a stroke can be delayed while these options are explored.

    Pain

    • The pain can occur in any part of the body, resulting from a restriction of blood flow to that area.

    Seizures

    • While an evaluation of brain function will be performed, the primary emphasis is usually on controlling the seizure.

    Sudden Fall

    • As the stroke impairs the normal circulation of blood to the brain, a lack of coordination may result.
