Does thyroid medication cause bone loss?

The use of levothyroxine for thyroid hormone replacement does not cause bone loss and may in fact have protective effects on bone. While older thyroid medications, such as thyroxine (T4), could cause bone loss, this is not a concern with levothyroxine.
