Supplements That Help Your Thyroid

Once you've been diagnosed with a thyroid condition, there are supplements you can take to help keep your thyroid in balance. However, supplements should never be used in place of medication prescribed by your doctor.
  1. Selenium

    • Selenium is required by your thyroid to create the proper amounts of thyroid hormone. It is essential for your thyroid hormone, as it helps it regulate the functioning of your organs.

    Zinc

    • Zinc is essential for the production of thyroid hormone and for its ability to work properly in your body. Zinc also affects how well your immune system functions, which affects your thyroid.

    Vitamin A

    • Your body needs vitamin A to convert T4, or thyroxine (a thyroid hormone), into T3, or triiodothyronine (another form of thyroid hormone). The conversion of T4 to T3 is imperative to stave off hypothyroidism, or an underactive thyroid.

    Vitamin E

    • Vitamin E can be beneficial because it helps your thyroid work properly and prevents oxidative damage to your blood vessels that is caused by a thyroid imbalance.

    Carnitine

    • If you are suffering from hyperthyroidism, which means your thyroid is overactive, carnitine is a helpful supplement. Carnitine blocks the action of thyroid hormone on your cells without preventing your thyroid from producing the hormone.
