Adrenal Exhaustion Therapy
The adrenal glands are small but powerful glands that are located above the kidneys. Their job is to release more than 50 hormones to regulate body processes. If these glands are not working correctly, adrenal exhaustion or fatigue may occur. Adrenal exhaustion can cause a significant loss of quality of life. However there are treatment interventions that can alleviate symptoms and decrease a chance of recurrence.-
Symptoms of Adrenal Exhaustion
-
Adrenal exhaustion symptoms may mimic other illnesses, so it is important to work with your medical provider when addressing this issue. Some symptoms include "foggy" brain, fatigue, distinct energy patterns (same time each day for high energy and low energy), salt cravings, inability to lose weight, unexplained weight gain and muscle weakness.
Caution
-
As you begin to address adrenal exhaustion, you may notice the abundance of claims of cures currently on the market. Be aware there is not a specific medication that will cure you. Reversal of this condition takes time and a commitment to lifestyle changes.
Lifestyle Alterations
-
The most important change you can make in addressing adrenal exhaustion is to address your stress level. It is vital that negative stress be decreased. Do this by learning relaxations skills such as meditation, muscle relaxation or relaxed breathing. Develop a support system in your life that includes people you trust and who can encourage you in this area. Laugh more, since this actually is like exercise to your adrenals. Get plenty of sleep and sleep in late whenever you can. Take breaks daily in an area where you can lie down if at all possible. Eat regular meals and protein-rich snacks.
Dietary Changes
-
Decrease carbohydrates in general, especially processed ones. Make most of your carbohydrate consumption be composed of whole grains. Pair any carbohydrate you eat with a protein. Include vegetables in all your meals. Have healthy oils such as olive, safflower or nut at all meals. Add sea salt to your daily intake. Put 1/8 tsp. in 8 oz. of water and drink after waking up and a half-hour before the lowest energy time of your day. Avoid caffeine, trans and saturated fats, chocolate, processed food and junk food.
Supplements
-
Supplements may help in addressing adrenal fatigue. Add vitamin C, magnesium, calcium, vitamin E and a vitamin B complex to your diet. In addition, licorice root extract may be beneficial in addressing symptoms. With these supplements and any other changes you make, remember to involve your physician in order to ensure your safety and receive optimal health benefits. Don't expect an instantaneous cure, but you will see a gradual decrease of symptoms if you continue with these changes.
