How to Maintain Thyroid Health

The thyroid is a small gland located in the front of the neck. Its main function is to regulate metabolism and maintain energy production in body cells. When the thyroid malfunctions, it causes either an overactive (hyperthyroidism) or underactive (hypothyroidism) gland. Common reasons for thyroid malfunction include a family history, stress, heavy metal toxicity, autoimmune disease and cancer. Symptoms of an underactive thyroid can include fatigue, depression, hair loss, weight gain, dry skin, menstrual problems and constipation.
By contrast, someone with an overactive thyroid may experience excessive energy production, excessive sweating, diarrhea, anxiety and a racing or abnormal heartbeat.

Contact your physician if you experience any of the above symptoms. Diagnosing thyroid disease involves a simple blood test, and early diagnosis and treatment of thyroid disorders will help to maintain optimum health.

Follow your physician's orders. Treatment for thyroid disease can include something as simple as a change in diet. Some studies have shown that taking a daily dose of coconut oil, which is high in medium chain fats, can improve the body's thyroid function.
Shellfish have been shown to increase thyroid function, as they are rich in iodine molecules which are used in the production of thyroid hormones. On the other hand, foods such as fermented soy products and millet have been shown to slow down an overactive thyroid, as they interfere with iodine uptake and also with the production of thyroid hormones.

Exercise regularly. Low-impact aerobic workouts such as bicycling and stair-stepping are some examples of exercises that burn a large number of calories while increasing lung capacity. As a result, more oxygen is brought into the blood and the muscles of the body, which increases both energy and metabolism. An increased metabolism also promotes healthy weight loss.
