Supplements for Thyroid Conditions

In addition to medications prescribed by your doctor, there are supplements you can take to help improve your thyroid condition. It is important to consult your doctor before beginning any supplement or treatment program.
  1. Goitrogens

    • If you suffer from hyperthyroidism, or an overactive thyroid, goitrogens can be effective in blocking iodine absorption. However, if you have an underactive thyroid, or hypothyroidism, goitrogens can interfere negatively. Some common foods that are goitrogenic are broccoli, kale, soy products, peanuts, strawberries, watercress, cabbage and cauliflower.

    Lemon Balm

    • Lemon balm can inhibit the binding of TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) receptors. It also reduces anxiety, one of the side effects of hyperthyroidism. Lemon balm has been used as a treatment for Graves' disease, which is often a cause of hyperthyroidism.

    Soy

    • For hyperthyroid patients, soy has thyroid-inhibiting properties that are potent. In some cases, it can help lower thyroid function enough to help you avoid using prescriptions to control your thyroid.

    5-HTP

    • Hypothyroid patients have found relief from symptoms after taking 5-HTP. 5-HTP has been shown to help with insomnia and depression, as it aids in the production of serotonin.

    Rose Root

    • Many hyperthyroid and hypothyroid patients have problems with low energy. Rose root, or rhodiola rosea, can help alleviate depression and enhance energy. Rose root also aids in concentration and stress handling.
