Supplements for Thyroid Problems
For people with thyroid imbalances, alternative remedies such as supplements have been found successful in alleviating thyroid-related symptoms.-
The Facts
-
Your thyroid is a small endocrine gland in the lower part of your neck that produces, stores and releases thyroid hormones T3 and T4, which help control your metabolism.
Significance
-
According to Mary J. Shomon in "Living Well with Graves' Disease and Hyperthyroidism," at least 25 million people in the United States have a malfunctioning thyroid gland, and women are seven times more likely to develop a thyroid condition than men.
Types
-
Dr. Ridha Arem, who wrote "The Thyroid Solution: A Revolutionary Mind-Body Program for Regaining Your Emotional and Physical Health," suggests supplements for specific thyroid symptoms. Arem says glutamic acid can reduce anxiety and other stress-related problems, and recommends rose root to decrease depression, boost energy and help you handle stress.
According to Arem, quercetin is highly recommended for people suffering from a thyroid imbalance. Carnitine supplements, Shomon says, should improve hyperthyroidism symptoms within two weeks, while fulvic acid---in combination with omega 3s, calcium, magnesium and vitamins A, B-complex, C and E---can help reduce elevated T4 levels.
Considerations
-
Pregnancy and smoking are both risk factors for hyperthyroidism. If you have a family history of thyroid problems or are between 20 and 40, you are also more at risk, Shomon says.
Warnings
-
Supplements can interfere with other medications. Consult your doctor before ending or beginning a thyroid treatment regimen.
