Armour Thyroid is a small tablet with a strong odor. They are tan in color with an embossed "A" on one side of the pill. They are available only by prescription and have no generic available.
Function

Armour Thyroid is used to treat underactive thyroids or hypothyroid patients. It replaces the thyroid hormones the body has stopped (or significantly reduced) producing.
Size

Patients begin Armour Thyroid doses around 30 mg, increasing by increments of 15 mg every two to three weeks as required. The average dose is between 60 and 120 mg. Armour Thyroid comes in doses of 15 mg, 30 mg, 60 mg, 90 mg, 120 mg, 180 mg, 240 mg and 300 mg.
Effects

Most patients do not experience side effects from Armour Thyroid. A minimal amount may have trouble sleeping, irregular heartbeat, allergic reaction and mouth swelling.
Considerations

Armour Thyroid should be taken daily on an empty stomach but if a dose is missed, do not double up, just wait until the next day.
