Information on the Thyroid Gland & Depression

A common byproduct of diseases of the thyroid are symptoms that mimic depression. In many cases, the condition is wrongly diagnosed as mental illness.
  1. Symptoms of Hyperthyroidism

    • People with hyperthyroidism can experience symptoms such as anxiety, irritability and difficulty eating and sleeping. In severe cases, sufferers can appear schizophrenic.

    Symptoms of Hypothyroidism

    • If a person's thyroid isn't producing enough hormones, symptoms can include poor memory, lack of interest in things that once gave great pleasure and loss of personality.

    Warning

    • If not treated, thyroid issues can have a permanent effect on the brain, such as dementia or other damage.

    Treatment

    • Most often, treatment of thyroid issues involves hormones to replace those missing or drugs to slow down the production of too many hormones. In some situations, anti-depressant drugs, such as lithium, can help curb symptoms.

    Prevention/Solution

    • When treated properly, a thyroid issue can be resolved and old personalities and traits return. However, in many cases the thyroid is not considered the root of depression.
