Side Effects of Hypothyroidism

Hypothyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid is underactive. The thyroid will not produce enough hormones that the body needs, and serious medical complications can ensue if the condition is not treated.

  1. Obesity

    • Obesity is one of the side effects of hypothyroidism. Obesity is considered a serious medical condition as it can cause heart complications.

    Infertility

    • Hypothyroidism can cause women and men to become infertile. The Mayo Clinic says treatment with synthetic thyroid hormone may not fully restore fertility, and other treatments may be necessary.

    Heart Disease

    • Heart disease is yet another serious complication of prolonged hypothyroidism. This condition can be fatal if not treated.

    Joint Pain

    • Joint pain, while not overly serious, can cause those who suffer from it to have difficulty performing regular activities. Joint pain can be caused by untreated hypothyroidism.

    Depression

    • An imbalance of thyroid hormnes can cause depression. The thyroid helps in creating these hormones, so depression can occur if the thyroid is underactive.
