Does Low Thyroid Cause Allergic Reactions?

Hypothyroidism (low thyroid) does not cause allergic reactions. However, some symptoms of low thyroid are similar to the symptoms of an allergic reaction. Any side affects or symptoms should be discussed with your primary care physician or specialist.
  1. Hypothyroidism Symptoms

    • Symptoms include fatigue, depression, sensitivity to cold, weight gain, forgetfulness, muscle weakness, puffy face, dry or brittle hair, dry skin, brittle fingernails, constipation, muscle cramps and increased menstrual flow.

    Allergic Reaction

    • An allergic reaction is caused by an overreaction by the immune system to a harmless substance called an allergen. Mild symptoms include rash, itchy watery eyes and congestion; moderate symptoms include itchiness and difficulty breathing.

    Grave's Opthalmopathy

    • In rare cases, Grave's opthalmopathy can be present if hypothyroidism develops from the treatment of Grave's disease (hyperthyroidism). The symptoms for Grave's opthalmopathy include dry, irritated eyes, puffy eyelids and redness.

    Levothyroxine

    • Levothyroxine is the generic name for the medication taken for hyperthyroidism. Allergic reaction to this drug is unlikely, but symptoms may include rash, itching, swelling (especially of the face, tongue and throat), dizziness and trouble breathing.

    Side Affects

    • Side affects may occur if you are taking over-the-counter medications, including vitamins, minerals, herbal products or other drugs with levothyroxine. Check with your physician if you are taking lithium, amiodarone or antidepressants.
