Side Effects of Tapazol
Tapazole is a medication primarily used to treat an overactive thyroid gland (hyperthyroidism). A brand name for methimazole, Tapazole also is prescribed to lessen symptoms or inactivate the gland before surgical removal or radioactive iodine treatment. Side effects are uncommon.-
More Frequent Effects
-
Although Tapazole side effects are unlikely, the most common ones involve skin reactions such as rash, hives and hair loss. Other possible effects include heartburn, nausea, joint or muscle pain, headache, drowsiness or dizziness.
Considerations
-
Tapazole can cause a reduction in white blood cells, the cells important for fighting infection. Patients may be more vulnerable to contagious illness and should avoid anyone with colds, flu or other infectious disease.
Risks
-
Tapazole also can cause a decrease in blood platelets, leading to increased bleeding. Rarely, some patients experience allergic reactions, hepatitis and liver damage.
Concerns for Women
-
Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should not take Tapazole because it causes severe birth defects. Breastfeeding women also should not take Tapazole because it can harm the baby.
Drug Interactions
-
Tapazole interacts with numerous drugs, including anticoagulants, beta blockers, digoxin and theophylline.
