Thyroid Condition Symptoms

The thyroid gland is responsible for converting food in to energy. It can be under active or over active. These conditions, called hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism, cause problems at both ends of the extreme.
  1. Neck

    • The thyroid gland is in the neck, so problems are often seen here first. The thyroid may become swollen or might cause pain and discomfort.

    Weight

    • The most known symptoms have to do with weight. Weight gain or loss regardless of food intake and in spite of steps to control the gain or loss can be an indication of a thyroid problem.

    Cholesterol

    • Cholesterol symptoms are similar to the weight symptoms. If cholesterol is too high or to low despite attempts to control it, patients might have thyroid issues.

    Skin and Hair

    • Skin and hair can be affected by thyroid problems. Excessively dry skin and loss of hair are indicators of a thyroid disease.

    Family History

    • A family history of thyroid problems can indicate an increased risk factor for thyroid disease, but knowing about other cases can be hard because of issues with terms. Listen for words such as "goiter" and "gland troubles." Those are thyroid issues.
