Thyroid Symptoms in Boys

Hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland does not produce enough hormones. It most often affects women over 50, but it can also affect young boys. If left untreated, hypothyroidism can cause a myriad of health problems.
  1. Symptoms

    • Most often, boys with hypothyroidism have the same symptoms as adults with the condition such as fatigue, muscle pain and weight gain.

    Growth

    • Since the proper growth hormones are not produced, boys with hypothyroidism tend to be shorter than normal.

    Dental

    • Hormones produced by the thyroid affect the teeth as well, so boys with hypothyroidism will experience late growth of their permanent teeth.

    Puberty

    • Puberty is delayed for boys affected with this condition. Their voices will take longer to change, and they will appear like children while their peers are changing into young adults.

    Brain Function

    • Boys will hypothyroidism will experience some mental impairment if not treated. The proper hormones that help develop executive function will be missing.
