Gastrointestinal Symptoms of Hyperthyroidism

Hyperthyroidism is a condition in which they thyroid gland produces too much of the hormone thyroxine. Hyperthyroidism is a serious condition that must be treated appropriately. Untreated thyroid disease can lead to permanent heart damage or death.
  1. Thyroid Gland

    • In healthy persons, the thyroid produces the proper amounts of two hormones, thyroxine 3 and thyroxine 4. These hormones regulate the metabolism.

    Hyperthyroidism

    • A person with hyperthyroidism often experiences sudden dramatic weight loss. Other symptoms include rapid heartbeat, tremors in the extremities and uncontrolled sweating.

    Increased Appetite

    • One of the most immediately noticeable gastrointestinal symptoms is increased appetite. This increased appetite is the result of having a much higher than normal metabolism. Therefore, a person with hyperthyroidism may eat more yet continue to lose weight.

    Increased Bowel Movement

    • Another gastrointestinal symptom of hyperthyroidism is increased bowel movements. People suffering from overactive thyroid condition typically report a change in bowel patterns; particularly, increased frequency of bowel movements.

    TSH Test

    • Hyperthyroidism can be confirmed with a TSH test. This test measures the levels of thyroxine and TSH (another chemical produced by the thyroid) that are present in the blood. A physician may also inquire about whether or not a family history of overactive thyroid is present.

    Treatment Options

    • There are several treatment options for hyperthyroidism. These options include medications to lower the amount of hormones produced by the thyroid, surgery, and radioactive iodine therapy.
