How to Moisturize Hair After Hypothyroid Damage

Hypothyroidism is a condition that affects approximately 5 percent of the population and is more commonly found in women than in men. Thyroid hormone is found throughout the body, and when too little of this hormone is produced, several parts of the body can be affected. Everything from intolerance to cold weather to fatigue and depression can result from hypothyroidism. Changes in hair — both hair loss and dry hair — are symptoms of hypothyroidism as well.

Eat a nutritious diet rich in protein and Omega-3 essential fatty acids. Eat lean meats and poultry, fish, cheese, eggs, legumes, seeds and nuts as part of a hair healthy diet. Fish oil and flax seeds will provide plenty of Omega-3 fatty acids as well.

Take supplements daily. The B vitamins (B3 and B5), folic acid, magnesium, zinc, sulfur and inositol are important for hair health and growth. The amino acids L-Cysteine and L-Methionine are also known to improve the texture of hair.

Cleanse your hair two to three times every week. Make sure to choose a shampoo that’s designed specifically for dry hair.

    • 4

Condition your hair with vinegar, which is known to cleanse hair and cause shine. Work one tablespoon of vinegar through hair and rinse it out. If dandruff is a problem, combine half a cup of vinegar with two cups of water and work it through your hair.

    • 5

Apply a hot oil treatment to hair every month. Work two tablespoons of olive or almond oil through yoiur hair. Next, place a wet towel in the microwave for 30 seconds, then wrap it around your hair. Rinse the oil out of your hair after a half-hour.

Limit the amount of heat styling that’s used on your hair. When possible, allow your hair to air dry. Use heat-styling tools, such as flat irons, curling irons and blow dryers, sparingly.
