What is keratosis?
Keratosis is a skin condition that causes dry, scaly patches of skin to form. It is usually harmless and does not require treatment. There are many different types of keratosis, but the most common are:
* Actinic keratosis is caused by sun damage and is most common in fair-skinned people who have had a lot of sun exposure. Actinic keratosis can develop into skin cancer, so it is important to have it checked by a doctor.
* Seborrheic keratosis is a common skin condition that affects older adults. It is caused by an overgrowth of skin cells and is not related to sun damage. Seborrheic keratosis is usually harmless and does not require treatment.
* Stasis dermatitis is a skin condition that occurs in people who have poor circulation in their legs. It can cause dry, scaly patches of skin to form on the lower legs.
* Lichen simplex chronicus is a skin condition that is caused by chronic itching. It can cause dry, scaly patches of skin to form anywhere on the body.
Treatment for keratosis is usually not necessary. If the condition is bothering you, your doctor may recommend a topical cream or ointment to help soften and remove the scaly patches. In some cases, laser therapy or cryotherapy may be used to remove keratosis.
