Benign Tumor on Sciatic Nerve

If you are experiencing pain in your back and leg, you could have a problem with your sciatic nerve. Your doctor can determine if the problem is a slipped disk or a benign tumor on the nerve.
  1. Sciatic Nerve

    • Your sciatic nerve begins in your spine and runs down the back of each of your legs. It gives you control over the muscles in the backs of your knees and lower legs.

    Benign Tumors

    • Benign tumors are noncancerous, so they will not spread throughout your body, according to the National Institutes of Health. Benign tumors called schwannomas can grow around your sciatic nerve.

    Symptoms

    • Benign tumors can put pressure on your sciatic nerve, causing back pain that radiates down your buttock and continues down the back of your leg. They can also cause muscle weakness and loss of sensation.

    Treatment

    • A benign tumor on your sciatic nerve can be treated through surgery to remove it, according to the Mayo Clinic.

    Considerations

    • Some tumors can be so intertwined with your sciatic nerve that removing them without damaging the nerve can be a challenge.
