Signs of an Internal Hemangioma
Internal hemangiomas are not uncommon though carry increased health risks over those occurring on the skin. Primarily presenting in infants, these benign tumors will grow rapidly and over time experience a period of involution where they will disappear on their own. Those growing internally may put pressure on vital organs and may have to be treated or removed before they can shrink naturally.-
Lung and Breathing Function
-
Difficulty breathing may result from hemangiomas growing or present in and around lung tissue. In addition to breathing issues, difficulty swallowing may occur if the tumors are close to bronchial tubes or near enough to mouth to cause an issue with chewing.
Secondary Infections
-
While benign, internal hemangiomas may cause irritation of internal organs that they are close to. If injury occurs, bleeding may issue from the lesions, which will present as pain. This bleeding may result in secondary infections (bacterial/yeast/upper respiratory infections) of these internal organs and areas of the body.
Vision Problems
-
Hemangiomas around the eyes cause vision problems. These will present as strabismus, a condition where the eyes do not line up the information they're receiving properly, resulting in crossed eyes. They may also present with amblyopia, a condition more commonly referred to as "lazy eye."
