Painless Bone Tumors in the Rib in Children

Tumors near or on the ribs are either benign or malignant. According to Merck.com, primary chest wall tumors account for 5 percent of all thoracic tumors and 1 percent to 2 percent of all primary tumors (tumors that are at the site where they originally arose).
  1. Osteochondroma

    • Osteochondroma is one of the most common benign bone tumors. This tumor originates from an area of the rib called the metaphyseal region.

    Chondroma

    • Chondroma is a painless tumor that originates at the costochondral junction of the rib. This is considered a possible malignant tumor.

    Fibrous Dysplasia

    • Fibrous dysplasia is a tumor that is cystic lesion. It can be a cause of Albright's syndrome.

    Myeloma

    • Myeloma is the most common malignant rib tumor and is painless. It originates in the chest wall and occurs mainly in older adults, and some children.
