About Adrenal Tumors
The endocrine system, including the adrenal glands, secretes substances that help to maintain the body's proper functioning. Conditions, such as tumors, that affect the glands will disrupt the body's normal functioning.-
Adrenal Glands
-
Atop each kidney sits a gland known as the adrenal gland. Adrenal glands secrete hormones that help the body control blood pressure, blood glucose and electrolyte levels.
Types of Tumors
-
Adenomas are the most common type of adrenal tumor. They are benign, or non-cancerous. Malignant tumors are rare.
Effects
-
The site of the tumor in the adrenal gland determines its effects. Adrenal tumors can cause uncontrolled blood pressure issues, overproduction of certain hormones, diabetes and weight gain, among other problems.
Prevention
-
At this time, research has not revealed a way to prevent adrenal tumors.
Treatment
-
Symptoms of benign and some malignant adrenal tumors may be controlled with medications. Some doctors may recommend surgery to get rid of benign tumors. Malignant tumors may be treated by surgical removal of the gland, chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy.
