How to Troubleshoot Thermoplastic

Thermoplastics reposition the head and neck in preparation for cancer treatments. This mask immobilization device helps keep patients stable and aligned for the radiation beam as they undergo therapy. Thermoplastics must set properly and be easily removed; otherwise, precious time is wasted before during and after treatment. Some easy-to-implement guidelines will make the process more streamlined for both doctor and patient.

Instructions

    • 1

Check the water bath temperature before you begin the warming process if the mask has uneven holes. Place the thermostat in the water after the temperature is reached. Refer to your product user's manual for recommended heating times. If the mask is under or over heated, its quality is compromised.

    • 2

Remove excess water from the thermoplastic immediately after you remove it from the water bath if you have problems stretching it over the patient's skin. Carefully form it around the nasion (bridge of the nose) and chin. Ensure that the patient is in the correct still position to receive treatment and the thermoplastic is evenly laid out.

    • 3

Allow the thermoplastic to completely cool before removing it from the patient if it tends to shrink. A warm mask that has not finished setting will reduce in size.

    • 4

Hold the frame taut against the table if the thermoplastic is difficult to remove from the patient. Pull the "T-Pin" or turn the "Swivel clamps" to remove the mask.
