Mural Ameloblastoma
Ameloblastomas are the most common types of tumors of the jaw. There are three subtypes of ameloblastomas including multicystic, peripheral and unicystic, which include mural ameloblastomas. Of the subtypes, unicystic tumors are the least common, occurring in 5 to 15 percent of cases, according to "Unicystic Ameloblastoma of the Mandible--An Unusual Case Report and Review of Literature."-
Definition
-
When an ameloblastoma, or tumor, has permeated the connective tissue of a cyst, it is called a mural ameloblastoma. Mural ameloblastomas affect the marrow and cortex of the jaw bones and are typically found in the lower jaw.
Diagnosis
-
Mural ameloblastomas are commonly asymptomatic but show up in routine dental X-rays. In the later stages of tumor formation, patients might experience jaw discomfort, including toothaches and swelling of the area.
Treatment
-
Patients with ameloblastomas are mostly in their 30s and 40s. Treatment for mural ameloblastomas involves surgery to cut out the tumor and surrounding tissue.
