Side Effects of Colazal

Colazal is a prescription medication used to treat ulcerative colitis. Despite its effectiveness, Colazal has the potential to cause side effects in some patients.
  1. Significance

    • According to studies published by the FDA, side effects of Colazal are twice as likely to occur in children of ages 5 to 18 than in adults.

    Types

    • Common side effects of Colazal include abdominal pain, diarrhea, joint pain, runny nose, insomnia, fatigue, flatulence, fever, indigestion, pharyngitis, coughing and loss of appetite.

    Risks

    • Infrequently, Colazal causes pneumonia or inflammation of the pancreas or blood vessels.

    Warning

    • Sudden, life-threatening kindey failure occurs in some patients who take Colazal. Because of this, your doctor is not likely to prescribe the drug if you have a history of kidney disease or disorders.

    Considerations

    • Because there is not yet sufficient evidence that Colazal has no unwanted effects upon the fetus, doctors typically do not prescribe the drug for pregnant women. Very rarely, Colazal exacerbates colitis rather than treating its symptoms.
