Home Remedy for a Mouth Abscess

A mouth abscess is caused when there is an accumulation of pus around the root of a tooth. This type of abscess can be very painful and even cause your tooth to become loose. This is something that will need to be treated by a dentist, but in the meantime, you will can get some relief from the pain.
  1. Mouthwash

    • Do not use an over-the-counter mouthwash. Instead, mix one-fourth teaspoon of potassium carbonate with a half glass of water. Swish this mixture in your mouth for on to two minutes. Do this three to five times and within a few hours you should feel some relief. The alkaline solution will help kill the bacteria causing the abscess.

    Tea Bags

    • This will only work if you catch the abscess at the early stages. Place a dry tea bag on the infected spot. Leave it there for a few hours. The tea bag will help knock out the infection. It will work better if you can put some salt on the infected area before placing the tea bag in your mouth. However, this will cause a bit of stinging at first.

    Pack Your Tooth

    • Make a packing for the infected area by mixing a tablespoon of baking soda with a tablespoon of salt. Take a wet cotton ball and dip it into the mixture. Then pack the cotton ball in between your cheek and the abscess area. Keep it there for a couple of hours. Rinse your mouth with hydrogen peroxide or tea tree oil. This will disinfect the area. Do this two or three times a day.

      If your abscess starts to open and drain, then brush your teeth and soak a cotton ball with hydrogen peroxide and place that between your tooth and abscess.
