Signs of a Bleeding Ulcer

A bleeding ulcer is also known as a peptic ulcer. It can be caused by many things, including different medications or a bacterial infection. It is commonly a tear or sore in the lining of your stomach or upper small intestine. Some people do not experience any symptoms, while others experience a variety of symptoms. Proper and immediate medical treatment is essential in healing the ulcer.
  1. Black Stools

    • Black or tarry-colored stools are also known as melena and may be present if you have a bleeding ulcer.

    Hematemesis

    • Hematemesis is the vomiting of blood. This may occur if you have a bleeding ulcer. Your stools may also have a very bad odor.

    Hematochezia

    • Hematochezia is red blood coming from the rectum. This can be a very serious sign as it may indicate the loss of a significant amount of blood.

    Heartburn

    • If you have a bleeding ulcer, you may be likely to suffer from heartburn after a meal, as over half of the people with bleeding ulcers have this symptom.

    Pain

    • Some people experience a burning pain or severe pain in the abdomen or chest from a bleeding ulcer. This pain may not develop until hours after eating, after the food is gone from the stomach and thus the food's buffering effect is gone as well.
