Home Remedy for Abcesses

An abscess is a bacterial infection caused by a collection of pus in a particular area on the skin or gums. You will notice extreme pain and throbbing in the area. If you are experiencing this type of infection, you might need medical treatment. In the meantime, there are several things you can do to help alleviate the pain until you can be seen by your general practitioner or dentist.
  1. Tea Bag

    • A good remedy for an abscessed tooth is to put a dry black tea bag on the inside of your cheek to cover the abscess. Leave it there for several hours or overnight. This will help to draw out the infection and drain the pus, which in turn will help the swelling go down as well as provide relief from the pain.

    Salt and Baking Soda

    • Another way to treat an abscessed tooth is to mix 1 tbs. of salt and 1 tbs. of baking soda in a small cup. Wet a cotton ball and dip it in the salt and baking soda. Put it on the abscess, between cheek and tooth, and leave it there for several hours. Do this twice a day and it will help drain the abscess and relieve the pain.

    Drain It

    • Sterilize a pin in boiling water. Using your finger, pinpoint exactly where the abscess originates. If you want, place a piece of ice on the spot to help numb the area. When you are ready, stick the sharp end of the pin into the abscessed area. You will start to see a little blood. Continue doing this until you see a lot of blood and pus draining from the spot. Although this sounds unpleasant, you will feel instant relief. Try and get as much of the infection out as you can by squeezing and pressing the area. Put a little bit of hydrogen peroxide on a cotton ball and dab the area or rinse your mouth out with mouth wash. This will work for a skin or tooth abscess.

    Warm Heat

    • If you have an abscess on your skin, apply heat to the area. Heating the abscess will help get the blood circulating. Once the blood begins circulating, your body's ability to fight off infection will be improved because the heat will attract white blood cells to the affected area. Repeat this several times a day.
