Diet Supplements for a Gastric Ulcer
Peptic ulcers are sores or lesions in the digestive system. They are known as gastric ulcers when they occur in the stomach lining. While curable, gastric ulcers are typically painful and may cause inflammation, gas or internal bleeding. It is important to know what to eat if you have a gastric ulcer, as many foods can further irritate symptoms. It is also important to know the supplements that can help boost your immune system and reduce any adverse symptoms.-
Supplements
-
First speak with your doctor about supplements to reduce the pain and impact of your gastric ulcer. A doctor may prescribe antacids or proton-pump inhibitors. These are usually taken around mealtimes or before bedtime. They work by reducing acid in the stomach, which irritates gastric ulcers. Vitamins A, C, E, B and zinc should be taken daily to help repair stomach lining damaged by gastric ulcers. These supplements can be obtained in pill form and taken alongside food. Ingesting 500 to 1,000 mg of glutamine (an amino acid) provides a principal source of energy for cells that line the stomach wall and may help reduce the impact of gastric ulcers.
Maintain an adequate source of anti-oxidants. Anti-oxidants can be obtained by ingesting foods such as blueberries, cherries and squash. Ingesting omega-3 oil will boost your immunity and decrease any inflammation caused by gastric ulcers. Omega-3 oil can be obtained in pill form or by eating fish such as salmon. Drinking liquid infused with five to 10 drops of grapefruit seed extract may help reduce gastric ulcers caused by bacteria, fungi or viruses.
Diet
-
In addition to taking daily supplements, maintain a proper diet. Get an adequate amount of protein from foods such as eggs, meat and fish every day. Substitute raw vegetables for frozen or canned vegetables that do not produce gas. Vegetables that produce gas include broccoli, corn, onions, green peppers, cabbage and cucumber. Use mild dressings, condiments and sauces to flavor your food. Eat periodically--at least three times per day--and chew slowly. Do not fast or starve yourself.
Warning
-
There are several things to avoid if you have a gastric ulcer. Avoid ingesting products containing caffeine, such as coffee and certain sodas. Avoid ingesting foods that have high levels of acidity, such as tomatoes, chocolate and citrus drinks. Do not use milk or cream-based products such as antacids. While many exhibit a calming effect on the stomach, they can also stimulate gastric ulcers and cause unnecessary pain. Do not smoke if you have a gastric ulcer.
