The Effects of Cayenne Pepper on Ulcers
Ulcers are sores that form in the lining of the stomach, below the intestine, or occasionally in the esophagus. Their cause is a matter of conjecture. Often, they are attributed to bacteria, excess acid being produced, or prescription painkillers. The treatment of ulcers includes reducing stress, prescription medication and, possibly, surgery. However, alternative medicine is appealing to many people. One such alternative treatment for ulcers is the use of cayenne pepper, which contains capsaicin, a substance that inhibits inflammation.-
Kills Bacteria
-
Cayenne pepper may kill bacteria that is often the cause of peptic ulcers. In addition to treating any existing ulcers, cayenne pepper may also prevent others in the future by buffering juices secreted by the stomach.
Stomach Lining
-
A substance called capsaicin is the ingredient in cayenne peppers that provides the spicy flavor and is also the ingredient that makes them so healing. It is believed that cayenne peppers can rebuild stomach tissue and may bring blood there more quickly.
Pain Reduction
-
Cayenne pepper can reduce ulcer-related pain. In addition, it serves as an anesthetic to stomach tissue and can help control ulcer-related bleeding, as well. It is effective on its own or as as part of a regimen that includes traditional treatment.
