Painful Sore on Tongue Home Remedy

Sores on the tongue or inside the mouth are generally thought to be canker sores. Canker sores usually heal on their own within 2 weeks; if the condition persists, see your doctor. For those sores that don't require medical intervention, home remedies offer easy and affordable solutions that effectively eliminate sores in the mouth.
  1. Carbamide Peroxide

    • Carbamide peroxide is the generic form of an over-the-counter medication that blends glycerin and peroxide. The peroxide disburses oxygen and cleans up the bacteria in the mouth, while the glycerin provides a protective coating that allows for healing. Look for this product under various brand names in your drug store.

Simply swishing some plain hydrogen peroxide around in your mouth can also help to heal and alleviate the pain of canker sores.

    Wet Tea Bags

    • Black tea bags contain high levels of tannins, which is an astringent that can eradicate the sores in your mouth. It has high levels of pain-relieving properties. Simply apply a wet black tea bag to the ulcerated area several times a day for relief.

    Antacids

    • Use common liquid antacids to alleviate the pain and heal a canker sore. Swish some antacid liquid in your mouth without swallowing. This will form a protective layer on the canker sore. It also has an antibacterial effect.

    Yogurt

    • Try eating some plain yogurt daily. Four tablespoons of yogurt every day may help to prevent canker sores from forming in the first place. Yogurt contains helpful bacteria that can fight off dirty mouth bacteria. Look for yogurt that contains active cultures called lactobacillus acidophilus.

    Goldenseal

    • Make a strong tea from goldenseal root, available at health food stores. Goldenseal has strong antiseptic and astringent properties and is mildly effective. Use the tea as a mouthwash several times a day.
