Urinary Urgency Treatment

If you must stop working or performing fun activities because of sudden urges to urinate that you cannot ignore, you could be experiencing urinary urgency. Your doctor can diagnose the cause of it and offer you treatment options.
  1. Urinary Urgency

    • Urinary urgency is the strong sensation of needing to urinate. The sensation often comes on suddenly and can cause pain or discomfort in your bladder. It can be caused by overactive bladder, other medical conditions, such as a urinary tract infection, and as a side effect of medications.

    Treatment - Overactive Bladder

    • If your urinary urgency is caused by overactive bladder, your doctor can prescribe drugs called anticholinergics. They keep your bladder muscles relaxed, preventing the contractions caused by overactive bladder.

    Treatment - Urinary Tract Infection

    • Urinary tract infections can be treated with antibiotics. Once the infection is gone, you will not experience urinary urgency.

    Treatment - Medications

    • Urinary urgency can be caused by medications that affect your bladder. By changing your medications, your doctor might be able to relieve your symptoms.

    Treatment – Pregnancy

    • You could experience urinary urgency as part of your pregnancy. If this happens, you will need to manage the urgency until you give birth.
