Male Bladder Infection Symptoms

Bladder infections in men are sometimes referred to as cystitis. According to the Mayo Clinic, bladder infections in men are often the result of an enlarged prostate, kidney stones or abnormal narrowing of the urethra. Merck reports that male bladder infections generally start with an infection in the urethra that travels to the prostate and into the bladder. Recurring bladder infections in men are most often caused by a persistent bacterial infection in the prostate.
  1. Frequent Urination

    • If you have a bladder infection you will feel as if your bladder is full, only to find you may pass little or no urine. The urge to urinate does not go away, even after the bladder has been emptied. You may make frequent trips to the restroom because the urge to urinate is strong.

    Burning and Stinging

    • You can experience a burning or stinging sensation in your urethra when you urinate. This burning sensation generally gets stronger toward the end of the urination stream and can linger for a few moments after urination has stopped. The pain can be very intense.

    Smell and Appearance

    • When a bladder infection is present, your urine can have a strong odor. In addition to the strong odor, you may notice your urine is cloudy or that it contains blood. Blood in the urine may not be visible. However, if blood is present in your urine it will be detected through testing. When blood is present in the urine it indicates high levels of white blood cells, which means the bladder infection is severe.

    Pain and Fever

    • You may have pain in your back, pelvic/pubic area or in your abdomen. Back pain that is accompanied by other symptoms is a strong sign that the infection has spread to your kidneys. Infections that spread to the kidneys will often produce a fever. The fever may be low-grade or high depending on the severity of the infection.

    Considerations

    • You will generally know when you have a bladder infection. The symptoms will make you uncomfortable and be hard to ignore. If you are experiencing any of the symptoms of a bladder infection, you should visit your doctor. Infections left untreated can result in kidney failure.
