Urinary Tract Infection Cure

A urinary tract infection (UTI) is a bacterial infection affecting any part of the urinary tract: kidneys, ureters, bladder or urethra. Most often the urethra and bladder, the lower part of the urinary tract, are affected. UTIs are painful and involve burning sensations when urinating, a constant urge to urinate and, sometimes, blood in the urine. There are several ways to combat UTIs.
  1. Antibiotics

    • Your doctor will prescribe antibiotics following a UTI diagnosis. If you are healthy and show no other signs of illness, your doctor may prescribe a short antibiotics program.
Amoxicillin is most often prescribed but for recurring UTIs, your doctor will prescribe different antibiotics so you do not build a tolerance to them. Stronger antibiotics often prescribed for UTIs include Ciproflaxacin, Levoflaxacin and Sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim. If you have allergies to penicillin or sulfur medications, be sure to let your doctor know.

    Recurring Infection Cures

    • Those prone to urinary tract infections can work with their doctors and devise a course to catch bacterial growth before it becomes a problematic infection. Your doctor may prescribe a longer course of antibiotics or help you devise a self-treatment program using home dip sticks for diagnostics.
Many women develop UTIs following sexual intercourse. If sexual activity is linked to your infections you may be prescribed a single antibiotic dose post-intercourse. Refrain from sexual activity until your infection is cured.

    Home Remedies

    • Drinking fluids high in caffeine or alcohol can irritate your bladder, aggravating a urinary tract infection. Avoid soft drinks and citrus juices. Water is the best fluid to consume through the course of a UTI as it flushes bacteria out of the system.
Cranberry juice is a longstanding UTI home remedy. While research has not confirmed cranberry juice's ability to cure a urinary tract infection, many people swear by it. The American Urological Association says cranberries can help prevent UTIs though may not cure them.
Other home remedies for easing the pain of a urinary tract infection including using warm compresses on your abdomen and taking over-the-counter pain medication such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen.
