Side Effects of Generic Flomax

The Mayo clinic states, Tamsulosin or generic Flomax, treats the condition of benign enlargement of the prostate. An enlarged prostate hinders the proper flow of urine causing men who suffer from this condition urinary difficulties. Tamsulosin does not reduce the size of the prostates but relaxes the prostate muscles allowing urine to flow freely. As with any medication, Tamsulosin has possible side effects. If you experience any side effects while using Tamsulosin, generic Flomax, consult your doctor immediately.

  1. Signs of Infection

    • Diarrhea, weakness, runny or stuffy nose, cough, fever, chills and sore throat are possible side effects of generic Flomax, according to Medline Plus. These symptoms are the body's immune system trying to fight off infection. Typically these are not life threatening if treated early; however if these symptoms persist, they can become life threatening. Generally, these symptoms go away once the body becomes accustomed to taking generic Flomax. If these signs of infection persist for more than seven days, contact a doctor immediately.

    Erectile Dysfunction and Priapism

    • Priapism is a common side effect of Tamsulosin. According to Cleveland Clinic, priapism is a prolonged, painful erection that lasts for more than four hours without any sexual stimulus. If you experience signs of priapism, go to the emergency immediately for treatment. Do not treat priapism yourself. Make certain to advise the hospital that you are taking Tamsulosin.

      Erectile dysfunction (ED), according to the National Kidney and Urologic Diseases Information Clearinghouse (NKUDIC), is the inability to either obtain or maintain an erection. This side effect of generic Flomax is less common than priapism but is a distressing condition for those who suffer from it. If you believe that generic Flomax is causing your ED, advise your doctor so you can explore other treatments for your enlarged prostate.

    Allergic Reactions

    • Allergic reactions are rare but serious side effect of Tamsulosin. Symptoms of allergic reactions include nasal congestion, hives, rash, itching, dizziness/lightheadedness and red, watery eyes states Medline Plus. If Tamsulosin causes an allergic reaction, see your doctor as a different medication or treatment may be needed for your enlarged prostate.

    Insomnia

    • Stanford University defines insomnia as the difficulty to fall and/or stay asleep. Insomnia is a side effect of generic Flomax. Consult with a physician if you believe generic Flomax is the cause of your insomnia to find an appropriate solution or treatment for you.
