What Is Considered Excessive Urination?

Excessive urination, or polyuria, can affect men and women both. It becomes more common the older you are. If you are experiencing excessive urination, your doctor can help determine the reason why.

  1. Normal Urination

    • Normal urination in adults is 1,400 mL of urine passed during a day.

    Excessive Urination

    • According to the National Institutes of Health, passing more than 2.5 L of urine during a day is considered excessive urination.

    Nighttime Polyuria

    • Excessive urination can also occur at night, leading you to get up several times during the night to urinate, according to the Cleveland Clinic.

    Causes

    • Excessive urination can be caused by drinking too many fluids, taking diuretics, diabetes or kidney failure.

    Treatments

    • If your excessive urination is caused by an underlying medical condition, then treating the condition can ease the symptoms of polyuria. If you are consuming too many fluids, reducing how much you drink can help.
