Help for Interstitial Cystitis Odor

Interstitial cystitis is a condition of the bladder that causes painful and frequent urination---up to dozens of times per day. It is classified as a disability. Sufferers often also have frequent urinary tract infections and depression from the pain and disruption to their lives. While odor is not normally considered one of the symptoms of interstitial cystitis, it can become a problem because of secondary infections and other reasons.
  1. Possible Causes and Remedies

    • If you notice that your urine smells like ammonia, you are probably dehydrated. Drink plenty of water and other nonacidic drinks to keep your urine diluted. Talk with your doctor if you feel that one or more of your medications may be drying you out. It may be tempting to avoid drinking too many liquids because of the frustration involved in having a frequent urge to use the restroom. Your body needs fluid, however, especially clean water.
You may benefit from bladder training to reduce the frequency of the urges. Bladder training involves going to the restroom according to a schedule set by your physician, regardless of the urges you feel. This can give you more time to do the things you want to do besides visit the toilet. Do not avoid drinking enough water in an attempt to lessen your number of nature calls.
Check with your health care provider if your urine has a foul odor. Foul-smelling urine could mean you have one of many types of urinary tract infection. Women are especially prone to urinary tract infections because of the proximity of the vagina, anus and urethra. To prevent this from occurring, be sure to wipe from the front to the back after using the restroom. You may want to keep flushable wet wipes on hand to help cleanse the area thoroughly, especially after a bowel movement. If you do have an infection, your doctor will prescribe antibiotics after testing to determine the bacteria involved.
Some foods can cause a strong odor in your urine. If you are supplementing with vitamin B6, or eat a lot of foods that contain this vitamin, you may notice a strong odor. If you have ruled out all other causes, this is not something to be concerned about. Just drink plenty of water and gently clean yourself after urinating so you can leave the odor in the toilet.
