Medication for Urinary Frequency

Urinary frequency is one of the primary symptoms of an overactive bladder. Medication may be prescribed to treat urinary frequency and other symptoms of an overactive bladder.
  1. Symptoms

    • Symptoms of an overactive bladder include the need to urinate more than eight times within a 24-hour period, the need to urinate more than two times during the night and the sudden need to urinate along with urinary incontinence.

    Causes of Urinary Frequency

    • Urinary frequency often occurs as the result of involuntary bladder contractions. It may also occur as the result of inflamed urinary tract tissues, bladder abnormalities and urinary tract infections.

    Bladder Relaxers

    • Medications such as Detrol, Ditropan, Oxytrol, Sanctura, Vesicare and Enablex may be prescribed to help relax the bladder and reduce instances of involuntary bladder contractions.

    Botox Injections

    • Botox injections may also be used to paralyze bladder muscles for about six months at a time to reduce urinary frequency. Botox injections are only an option for severe bladder incontinence and may actually cause symptoms to worsen.

    Other Treatment Options

    • A physician may recommend other treatment options such as bladder training and avoiding caffeine and alcohol. Surgery may be required for very severe cases of overactive bladder.
