What Are the Treatments for Giggle Incontinence?

Doctors classify incontinence into four different categories: overflow, functional, urge and stress. Stress incontinence, also called giggle incontinence, occurs in women more often than men and can be treated surgically and non-surgically.
  1. Giggle Incontinence

    • Giggle incontinence occurs when you leak urine when you laugh, sneeze or move in a way that puts sudden pressure on your bladder.

    Cause

    • Giggle incontinence occurs when the pelvic muscles weaken and no longer provide enough support to your bladder and urethra to prevent urine from spilling out when your bladder is put under pressure.

    Significance

    • Women who have given birth or are going through menopause are more likely to experience giggle incontinence because of the changes these physical processes cause to their bodies.

    Non-surgical Treatments

    • Non-surgical treatments for giggle incontinence include urinating on a schedule so that your bladder does not fill and is less likely to leak. Also, Kegel exercises can strengthen your pelvic muscles so they better support your bladder. And, injections of bulking agents near your urinary sphincter can prevent urine leaks.

    Surgical Treatments

    • Giggle incontinence can be treated surgically either through a retropubic suspension procedure, in which sutures support the bladder neck, or through sling procedures, in which tissue is implanted to support the bladder neck.
