The Effects of an Untreated Urinary Infection

A urinary infection is usually uncomfortable when it first develops. Ignoring the infection is unwise. It has the potential to spread throughout your urinary system and to the rest of your body.

    • A urinary infection is an infection that occurs within in your urinary system. It can affect your urethra, bladder or kidneys. A urinary infection is caused by bacteria, and causes painful urination and fever.

    Treatment

    • Urinary infections are usually treated with a course of antibiotics. If left untreated, a urinary infection can lead to serious health problems.

    Kidney Infection

    • If your urinary infection spreads to your kidneys, they can become infected. If this remains untreated, you can become very ill with high fever, dehydration and potentially kidney damage.

    Sepsis

    • An untreated urinary infection could spread to your blood, leading to sepsis, which is potentially fatal.

    Considerations

    • When undergoing treatment for a urinary infection, it is important to take the full course of antibiotics to be sure all the damaging bacteria is cleared from your system.
