UTI Men Vs. Women Symptoms

Around 13 percent of women and 2 percent of men have developed a urinary tract infection (UTI) in the last 12 months, according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disease. Out of those infected, each may develop different symptoms. Some symptoms differ for men and women.

  1. Likelihood of Infection

    • More women develop urinary tract infections than men, mostly because of the shortness of the urethra and the short distance between the anus and urethra.

    Overall Symptoms

    • Burning during urination, frequent urination, incontinence fever and cloudy, strong-smelling urine are UTI symptoms that occur in both men and women.

    Symptoms in Men

    • Men may develop a full feeling around the rectum, back pain and a small amount of discharge from the penis.

    Symptoms in Women

    • Women, specifically, may feel pressure around the pubic bone and pain during sex.

    Prevention

    • Men and women can prevent UTIs by drinking plenty of fluids, completely voiding their bladder during urination and urinating after sexual intercourse. Women should also wipe from front to back after each bowel movement to prevent bacteria from entering the urinary tract.
