Male Bladder Infections

Bladder infections, known as cystitis, can occur in males of any age. Men are more effected by bladder infections after the age of 50, due to prostate problems. A bladder infection is generally a bacterial type infection that is treated with antibiotics.
  1. Symptoms

    • Frequent, burning and stinging urination is the most common sign of a bladder infection in males. Symptoms can also include only urinating a small amount, increase urge to urinate when the bladder is empty, pain in the pubic area, penile discharge, low back pain, blood in urine, fever and bad-smelling urine.

    Identification

    • Tests to identify your bladder infection usually include urinalysis and bacterial culture. Examination of your bladder by cystoscopy and ultrasound can also be performed.

    Treatment

    • Treatment for your bladder infection will include antibiotics to kill the bacteria and, if needed, your physician will prescribe antispasmodics to help relieve your pain.

    Activity

    • Avoid sexual intercourse until you have been free of symptoms for at least two weeks. Reduce your level of activities as necessary until your symptoms improve.

    Considerations

    • Drink at least eight glasses of fluid daily and avoid citrus fruit, caffeine and alcohol. Bladder irritation can occur. Cranberry juice is recommended by some health care providers to help acidify your urine.
