Urinary Burning Without Infection

Urinary burning is a common symptom of an infection; however, a burning sensation may be experienced without the presence of bacteria. Conditions that involve an infection are more easily diagnosed and treated. In those cases, bacteria is detected in the urine, and an antibiotic usually resolves the infection.

Interstitial Cystitis

• Interstitial cystitis is a disease involving the bladder. The bladder becomes irritated and causes pelvic pain and burning upon urination. This disease, which may be autoimmune in nature, is difficult to diagnose and is made worse by eating foods rich in potassium.

Enlarged Prostate

• Men with an enlarged prostate cite burning upon urination as a principal symptom. If you are experiencing prostate issues, it is important to rule out cancer.

Irritants

• Certain foods and beverages can irritate the bladder and cause burning upon urination. Foods that are spicy or acidic, along with caffeine and alcohol, can cause a burning sensation.

Reaction

• A burning sensation upon urination can also be a reaction to an irritant in a soap, deodorant, bubble bath or feminine hygiene product.

Intercourse

• Burning upon urination can occur sometimes after sexual intercourse. This is a common symptom that resolves on its own and is nothing to worry about.
