What Will Help to Lower the PSA?

Prostate specific antigen, or PSA, comes from the prostate gland of men. PSA is a protein responsible for making seminal fluid liquid. When PSA blood levels are too high, several health issues may be present, such as inflammation of the prostate gland, an enlarged prostate or---in the worst cases---prostate cancer. There are several ways to lower your PSA level.
  1. Cholesterol

    • In the 2008 Journal of Urology, researchers presented data suggesting a link between lowering low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and the PSA level. Patients given statins, which are drugs used to lower cholesterol, saw their PSA levels drop.

    Soy

    • In areas where soy is a diet staple, the incidence of prostate cancer is low. In a 2003 study on Chinese men reported in the Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention journal, when a supplement containing 50 grams of soy was administered to men diagnosed with prostate cancer, their PSA level went down by more than 12 percent. In comparison, another study group of men who were given a supplement containing 50 grams of wheat had a 40 percent rise in their PSA level.

    Green Tea

    • Green tea has many benefits, including lowering prostate cancer risk. It does this with a flavonoid called epigallocatechin gallate, or EGCG, that prevents the cancer-causing components of PSA from activating. Therefore, green tea or an extract made from green tea appears to be a natural product that lowers PSA.
