Effects of an Oversized Prostate
Because an enlarged prostate will press against the urethra, nearly all of the effects will be urinary problems. Prostate problems typically begin when men are in their 40s and the likelihood of an enlarged prostate increases with age. While the condition can be uncomfortable, it does not increase the risk for prostate cancer.-
Nighttime Urination
-
Nighttime urination is one of the most common symptoms of an oversized prostate. Waking up at least twice during the night to urinate is known as nocturia.
Flow Problems
-
Weak urine flow or problems starting to urinate are also symptoms on an enlarged prostate. Having the urination process interrupted by stopping and restarting is another common side effect.
Urgent Urination
-
Frequent urination, especially the need to urinate immediately, is another sign of prostate problems.
Hematuria
-
Hematuria, or blood in the urine, is a possible effect of an enlarged prostate. Gross hematuria occurs when the blood is visible without the use of a microscope.
Urinary Tract Infections
-
An oversized prostate may lead to urinary tract infections.
