Kidney Stone Vs. Prostatitis

Kidney stones and prostatitis are two conditions that are very painful and affect parts of the urinary system. Kidney stones, which are more common, affect the kidneys in men and women; and prostatitis affects the prostate gland in men.
  1. Kidney Stones

    • A kidney stone occurs when a piece of mineral that is formed in the kidney breaks free and gets into the urinary tract system. These can be the size of a piece of sand or as large as an inch long.

    Symptoms of Kidney Stones

    • The symptoms of a kidney stone are stomach pain, blood in the urine, decreased urine output, fever, chills, vomiting and nausea.

    Prostatitis

    • Prostatitis is an inflammation of the prostate gland. It often shows similar symptoms as kidney stones. The prostate gland produces semen, sits below the bladder and surrounds the urethra. This can be caused by bacteria and can also be long term.

    Symptoms Prostatitis

    • The symptoms of prostatisis are hesitation with urination, frequent urination at night, abdominal pain, fever, chills, vomiting, nausea, pain and burning with urination and pain of the penis or testicles.

    Treatments

    • The treatment for kidney stones is to let the stone pass naturally through the urine, but if it does not, a procedure to dissolve the stone can be performed. Treatment for prostatitis is a 2-4 week course of antibiotics.
