Penicillin for Urinary Tract Infections

Urinary tract infections are a common, painful ailment. Resulting from bacterial infections that enter the urethra, UTIs cause pain while urinating and extreme discomfort. Penicillin is commonly used for their treatment.

    • Urinary tract infections result from bacteria and affect the urinary system. They are more common in women than men, because women have shorter urethras.

    Penicillin

    • Penicillin is a commonly used antibiotic that works by infiltrating the bacteria's cell wall. After penicillin enters the cell of the bacteria, it works to kill the bacteria.

    Penicillin and UTIs

    • In recent years, penicillins such as amoxocillin are combined with other antibiotic treatments because the E. coli bacteria is immune to penicillin in up to 25 percent of all cases, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center.

    Taking Penicillin for a UTI

    • When penicillins are prescribed to treat urinary tract infections, they are administered as an oral antibiotic. The treatment usually lasts 10 days.

    Warnings

    • Many people are allergic to penicillin, so it is important to notify your doctor if you have an allergy to the antibiotic. Penicillin can result in death if taken by someone with an allergy to it.
