Alternative Ways to Treat a UTI
The kidneys, the bladder and the tubes that connect the two are known as the urinary tract. Any infection in that area is known as a UTI (Urinary Tract Infection) but most infections occur in the bladder. Because bacteria can become resistant to antibiotics, alternative therapies are becoming more widely used to treat UTIs.-
Treatment Options
-
The best known alternative treatment for a UTI is cranberry, either in juice or in capsule form. Cranberries contain a molecule called non-dialyzable material (NDM) that adheres to some bodily surfaces and prevents bacteria from penetrating.
Supplements such as potassium citrate and sodium citrate make the PH level in the urine more alkaline, which will inhibit the growth and development of bacteria that cause a UTI. Citrate supplements are to be taken during the day only. Urine that may remain in the body overnight can irritate tissues.
Native Americans used Uva ursi for centuries before the discovery of antibiotics. Uva ursi contains hydroquinone, a natural antibacterial chemical. Uva ursi also has astringent effects that will reduce inflammation and infection. Use caution when taking Uva ursi as long-term use can lead to liver damage.
A simple sugar that is naturally occurring, called D-mannose, can be taken to treat a UTI. The bacteria will attach to the D-mannose rather than to the walls of the bladder and will be eliminated with urination. When ingested orally, D-mannose enters the blood stream and travels through the kidneys and bladder before being voided.
Another option for treating an existing UTI is to take vitamin C daily, along with 8 to 10 glasses of water. The vitamin C will not only boost your immune system but will also raise the level of acid in your body. This will prevent bacteria growth.
Baking soda will level out the balance of acid in the urine, which will help to eliminate a UTI. Drink a mixture of ½ tsp. baking soda and 8 oz. water once a day. Begin this as soon as symptoms appear and continue until all symptoms are gone.
Drink a tea made of 1 tsp. goldenseal root in a cup of hot water. Goldenseal is a natural antiseptic and has been shown to have great success in curing UTIs. Do not use goldenseal during pregnancy as it has been shown to stimulate labor.
Prevention
-
To prevent recurring UTIs drink plenty of water and make cranberries in any form a regular part of your diet. Limit your intake of caffeine and sugars. Urinate frequently and avoid holding your urine, which allows bacteria to form.
