Complications From Bladder Infections

Bladder infections typically result from cystitis, or an inflammation of the bladder. These annoying and painful infections are also called urinary tract infections. A major cause of bladder infections is the E. coli bacteria.
  1. Symptoms

    • According to the Mayo Clinic, signs of a bladder infection include a burning sensation during urination, a frequent and persistent urge to urinate and passing a smaller than normal volume of urine.

    Kidney Infection

    • Bladder infections that are not treated can cause kidney infections that may damage those organs.

    Blood in Urine

    • Blood can appear in the urine of bladder infection sufferers who are undergoing chemotherapy.

    Aggravation of Symptoms

    • Bladder infection patients should drink plenty of water, but coffee, alcohol and citrus juices can aggravate the symptoms of cystitis and cause an increased frequency of urination. Spicy foods and caffeinated soft drinks should also be avoided.

    Treatment

    • Antibiotics are used to fight the bacteria that cause most bladder infections. Patients should take antibiotics for the entire period prescribed by their physicians.

    Risk Factors

    • Women, those with weakened immune systems and bladder catheter users have a greater risk of developing bladder infections.
