How to Sterilize Catheters

Catheters are small tubes that are inserted through the urethra to empty the bladder. They are available in a variety of styles, materials, types and sizes. Disposable catheters are packed in sterile packages and designed for single use. Reusable catheters are designed to be used multiple times. While it is not medically necessary to sterilize these catheters prior to each use, it is critical that they be thoroughly cleaned in between uses. Sterilizing will further minimize the risk of infection.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash your hands thoroughly before and after handling the catheter. Clean between each finger and under the nails.

    • 2

Rinse the catheter with running water for at least 30 seconds. Allow it to air dry on a paper towel for one hour.

    • 3

Pour one cup of rubbing alcohol into a plastic container. The alcohol used for this purpose may be reused in the container for up to one month. Keep the container covered between uses. Discard the alcohol after one month and replenish with a fresh supply.

    • 4

Place the catheter into the container with the alcohol. Make sure that the catheter is completely submerged into the alcohol. If not, add enough alcohol to completely submerge the catheter. Cover the container. Allow it to sit for five minutes. Remove the catheter from the container. Do not rinse the alcohol from the catheter. Store the catheter in a freezer bag until it is needed.

    • 5

When the catheter is ready for use, rinse it again with running water. If the catheter has been stored in the freezer bag for over seven days, remove it from the freezer bag and soak it for another five minutes before it is used.
